COLLINGWOOD NATIVE SIGNS WITH BLUES (Enterprise-Bulletin August 6th)
As a minor hockey player in Collingwood, Dustin Scott went to the Eddie Bush Memorial Arena on Friday nights to watch as the Collingwood Blues regularly challenged for the division lead. As a youngster he was part of the loud crowd that made playing in Collingwood exciting and intimidating all at the same time for opposition players.
As a young kid watching the Blues clinch their division titles, and the playoff battles with the Couchiching Terriers, he knew he wanted to be a part of it. He was a Collingwood kid who was going to play for the Blues.
This season Dustin Scott is getting his chance. The Collingwood Blues have signed the 18-year-old forward who played last season with the Owen Sound Greys in the Mid-Western Junior "B" Hockey League.
Blues Coach Chad Moreau sees a lot of upside in adding Scott to the lineup.
"He really wants to be here, he is very enthusiastic about being a Collingwood Blue, and that's very important," said Moreau.
Moreau was on those teams that Scott used to watch, and says that kind of pride in putting on the team jersey can help a lot.
"Along with wanting to be here, he brings something we lacked last year," said the coach. "Dustin finds a way to get pucks in the net. We need a forward who will work that hard, and turn it into results."
The Blues had the lowest goals-for total in the division last season. The team's leading scoring had only 29 points (a couple of players had more but scored some with other teams. The leading point getter was a defense-man.)
Moreau and the staff feel that with Scott and the addition of Ryan Purvis and Kurtus Thomson, the offence will improve.
"We also of course will have some veterans back, who, with a year's experience behind them, will refine their scoring touch," says Moreau.
Scott knows that things aren't the same in Collingwood as when he was a kid, and division titles and playoff victories haven't been as plentiful since the turn of the century.
"I want to be a part of bringing back that excitement to the arena," says the 18-year-old. "I know what this town is like; they support and appreciate teams that work hard, but let's be honest, it is still a lot more fun for everyone when you win."
Scott impressed the staff early in the spring tryouts. He had been to the Blues camps before, and given some advice on what to work on.
"Mostly I needed some experience," he said. "It is a big jump to this level of hockey. Last year in Owen Sound was great for me."
Scott had 22 goals and seven assists in 34 games (more points than any Blues forward over all of last season.)
"This year, I am going to get to play at home; I am really looking forward to contributing to the club," he said. "Really, I just can't wait for the season to start."
Scott won't have to wait long as the Blues finally have the draft schedule for the upcoming season. The team will open on the road Sept. 6 in Orangeville. The home opener is against Seguin on Sept. 12.
Training camp opened for the Blues over the weekend with four two-hour sessions over Saturday and Sunday. The hopefuls were put through their paces with a series of two-hour scrimmages.
"We are familiar with the skill sets of the people in camp," said Moreau. "We wanted to get a good look at them in game situations. We also wanted to see how their conditioning was.
"A two-hour scrimmage showed us a lot."
The Blues will continue to skate through the week with Tuesday and Thursday sessions. The team will host an exhibition game on Sunday at 2:30 p. m. The Brampton Capitals will be in town.
The team has a very busy preseason; they are trying to book a home game for the 17th of August as well, and have a home-and-home confirmed with Peterborough Stars at the end of the month. In between all of that the team goes to Huntsville the weekend of August 23rd to defend the title won at last year's Cottage Cup pre-season event.
"Last year we had decided that there weren't enough pre-season games," said Moreau. "This time around we have a few more games, which means some can be used to see if players fit in, and some can be used to get ready for the season."
